Course Information and Policies
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Calculus utilizes all basic skills studied in previous math classes, extending those into new concepts as students learn how to manipulate numbers, evaluate graphs, compare and contrast information, and incorporate real-life applications. There are two different approaches to the material in these courses: mathematical theory and applied mathematics. Mathematical theory is traditionally the college approach, and applied mathematics is a necessity for most engineering and business careers. Both approaches are utilized here. Calculus AB topics include limits, derivatives, integrals, and applications such as related rates, optimization, motion (physics), area, and volume. Equations are Cartesian (xy) and trigonometric. This year-long course is the equivalent of a typical first semester calculus course at the college level. WEB-BASED MATERIAL Student study materials include course syllabus, supplementary notes, assignments separate from the textbook, numerous practice problems, and suggestions for additional on-line resources. All of this material is provided on this website and/or OneNote notebooks. On occasion, however, materials may be handed out to students. Parents and guardians are encouraged to peruse the site, too. STUDENT MATERIALS Usual materials are needed; paper, notebooks, graph paper (4 or 5 squares per inch), writing utensils of more than one color, and a personal graphing calculator. All students will need a (thick) notebook used for notes and assignments. MARKING PERIOD GRADES Major grades (50%):
